Humane Smarts

Humane Smarts, a nonprofit foundation associated with Humane Exposures LLC, believes that education is crucial to helping at-risk youth move forward into productive lives. The mission of the Humane Smarts Foundation is to provide college financial assistance to young people committed into or affected by the criminal justice system.

The books of Humane Exposures Publishing seek to trigger public awareness of the patterns of neglect and abuse that cycle through generations. Born, Not Raised: Kids at Risk (2010) will explore the troubled psyches of youngsters serving time in juvenile hall. Without education and other humane assistance, many of these youth will be caught in the revolving door of institutionalization.

Maggots in My Sweet Potatoes: Women Doing Time (2008) features inmates such as Cindy Mulloy, deemed "least likely to succeed" by the GED counselor at the Las Colinas Detention Facility. Cindy is now clean and sober, earning a degree in psychology, and working part time for Humane Exposures.

Humane Smarts seeks to help young people such as Cindy and the residents of juvenile hall to break their own cycles of self-defeat. Beginning in 2009, the foundation will provide college scholarships to at-risk youth. Applicants must have earned their GED or high- school diploma, been accepted to an accredited college or university, and exhibit the will to succeed.

The scholarships will be funded in part by proceeds from the books of Humane Exposures Publishing, as well as contributions from concerned individuals.
